So, it's April 23. A chilly Monday, nearing the end of school. Our lives have all been disrupted a little bit so I know I'm off track with my homework, and I'd be willing to tolerate a little disruption on the kids part as well. My eldest daughter sits down a the table with two books in front of her: the book report book that is due on Wednesday and Origami Yoda, part II: Darth Paper Strikes Back. I watch her flip back and forth between them for a minute until suddenly a chunk of pages falls out of her book report book. She was reading a copy of Winnie the Pooh from 1971 (older than her father!) and by neglect she had destroyed this yellowed, fragile, paperback.
What's worse... she is only on chapter 3! I pitched a fit. I know I probably shouldn't have, but you just don't do that to a book! Books are to be valued, kept, and cherished (especially the old ones). Besides she's had a month to read the book and I've been reminding her every week. She knows what she needs to do; she's smart enough to do it too. What we have here is an organization and motivation problem.
I wonder if it's my fault a bit (alright, I'm pretty sure a lot of it is my fault). I can't say I'm exceptionally organized. The house always bordered on wreck even when I wasn't in school. They're spoiled and they have too much stuff in their rooms which hinders the ability to get work done in a clean, productive environment. I haven't taught them enough discipline. Where the heck did I get my discipline from, and how do I teach that?
It's been an awful semester and I'm hanging on by sheer will alone, and my eldest daughter has gotten caught up in all the "I hate school" drama that comes around this age. "It's cool to know nothing" (Kaiser Chiefs) and like most humans she's testing that concept.
I'm very glad I'm taking the summer off, I need to figure out a plan, clean out all this junk, and get these kids on track. I know Pastor says it takes all types in the world, and I got the gut feeling my kids could very well be incredibly different than me... but, you still have to get your homework done.
So,
GO GET YOUR FLIPPING HOMEWORK DONE!
