Success Is The Thing You Were Already Doing

I have to admit, I've actually been a bit bummed lately. Sunday we finally made it to church and what Pastor said really hit home with me. We, as humans, NEED a rest. I haven't rested.

When you don't rest it's easy for failure to creep in. The question of where your success lies, is in between the pillow and the sheets, the laundry and the dishes, the hours in the car, and the papers you have to squeeze into your hypothetical free time. I have always wondered where and when my BIG moment will be.

From an outsiders perspective SUCCESS is something amazing that just happens to you one day. We watched a documentary on the GNU/Linux boom tonight (Revolution OS), and it really illustrated the point: One day these guys were hackers tinkering with a operating systems, the next they were writing manifestos of conduct and then trading at a market value of over 250! WOW, right?

But there in lies the truth. These guys were ALWAYS into computers. They didn't do anything special by their standards... sure to the world it seemed like it was this amazing out of the blue thing... but they had worked on it for years. I keep reminding myself that except for a few cases, no one becomes famous overnight. There are years of records behind your favorite Band -before they made it big-. There are years of schooling and styles behind your favorite artist -before they hit the galleries-. The best way to get to Carnegie Hall is to practice - for years and years and years and years and years.....

I realized that when success comes for me, when she finally shows her face; I will not have known that she stopped by. There will be no calling card; no indication that my life and interests and perceptions have been altered,  but that maybe they have altered the world without my knowing it. Success creeps in to the passions you already have. No one rewards the thinkers on their ideas alone... but for the ideas they have implemented, the experiences they have created, and the path that they have already forged.

Maybe if I can alter my mindset for now, then I can focus not on the pain of waiting for "my time" but on the things that I need to do in order to "make it" -with out ever knowing it.-

I suppose no one ever realizes they are going to be a success. The surprise is not in the hard work, but the abrupt recognition.
