Some of my most defining visions of God have been over homework. Now of course all things are relative, but no thing is so minute that God is not involved. I was once a scoffer and far from God so I know anyone who's rejecting God's influence is laughing or rolling their eyes at this statement (if they didn't just X out of my blog immediately after reading the title). So those of you who continue reading, I have to assume are either really intrigued, or believers also: so.... is it cheating if an omnipotent being is doing your homework?
I think I first felt God's hand in my schoolwork when things were going terribly wrong with my Group Communications class. We lost the SaMarcFoundation to a funding issue which they seem to run into every fall (would love to see more local support for this organization!) and weren't sure where to go or who to call and had a very limited timeline. I ended up getting in touch with a contact over at the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Chattahoochee Valley and just felt the pull in my gut towards the project. I KNEW this was out of my control, and that it was all in God's control. We of course hit many road bumps, but seemed to make it through every time. Though we didn't make as big an impact as well all hoped, we did a tremendous lot of good for the organization and got great grades to boot.
So this semester has been a rough one also. The intern's desk is full of contacts that haven't written back, language dead ends, and other frustrating road blocks. As my husband and I were out on the town this weekend, I made not just one language contact, but 3! Of course not all of them will necessarily pan out, but this is serious headway, and in my gut I know it's God lead. I realized all these projects have little to do with me, it's not about my grade, it's about a greater good that I just happen to take part in. But since God's working on it with me, I seem to be bringing in the A's as well. (many thanks of course!)
For those of you who may not have ever considered the multicultural community in Columbus: 1) there is a VERY VERY VERY diverse population here. 2) Top three languages are Spanish, French, & German 3) It is really hard to get in touch with them, gain their trust, and convince them to volunteer to translate for the city (as must as it's difficult to find anyone with similar interests, gain their trust and convince them to do anything... human common bond I guess). So like trying to find a needle in a haystack I've been searching for a Health Communications Bilingual Candidate and now I have a few leads!!! This is surely inspired by a greater power :)
Wish me luck, or say a few prayers for me on my journey . I need them, and really the importance of this project I'm working on is greater than the scope most of us consider. The ability to translate health information and communicate it to those that might not understand it in English completely has a rippling effect that influences us all down to your family and your friends!
....and for all you super sensitive, totally intelligent individuals who "KNOW" everyone in America should speak English... I challenge you to go learn another language. Let me know how easy it is for you. I'd love to know.
