Internship, nothing like a Dilbert Cartoon... I hope

Nothing more fun than blogging and then having the whole thing disappear :P

So I just signed up for my fall internship! I'm excited but really nervous; I haven't worked since 2002! The great thing is it's totally flexible which is exactly what I need with my schedule and it involves interests I already have and have been working on (plus I get 3 credits out of it). I'll be designing a social media platform and also working on a network of disaster recovery and emergency notification for a multilingual/multicultural community.  I'm not naming the place where I'm interning in Blog just in case it becomes a problem. In class we've found out a lot of companies have to make absolutely sure of what you're doing before they'll let you even mention their name in passing if it's going on film or the internet. All y'all need to know is it's in an office setting and that's what made me nervous...

See I realized as I was leaving and being introduced to a few people this is a REAL office setting. Other than a brief stint as a secretary assistant straight out of high school, all of my jobs have been limited-staff situations. As a barista at an independent coffee shop, it was usually me and one other person (all those people on the other side of the counter didn't count, they're only there to ruin your day. Know that the next time you order a coffee). At the flower shop, it was me and the thorns! Housekeeping was the same, I intimately knew the cleaning materials, and did only moderate people management, and the only people I work with now I get to yell at (love y'all tho)... so the only things I know about office work are from TV!!! All I can think of now are the horror stories: Office Space and the red stapler, Dead Like Me and Happy Time Temp Agency, Dilbert.... these are the environments that make you cringe. I'm going to be the 'new intern' in it all ,subject to gossip, lame jokes, those forwards with the little kittens on them. I can hear Phyllis from The Office whispering to her neighbor in the next cubicle right now! I'm not ready for office drama!

Obviously I've been watching too much TV :) but I am a little nervous still. It's always scary getting used to a new environment, but I'm in it for the growing experience. If it doesn't make you squirm it's not worth doing I'm told. And as terrifying (and funny) as those office stories can be, they're fictional and exaggerated....

Still... there's truth behind the fiction, right?

Which means you'll probably hear more TALES from the Intern's Desk coming soon!
