It's 9/11. Unlike years before where I became teary eyed and remembered the day and the people and the shock... I calmly told my kids a little more about what life was like before 9/11 and the days after. My husband noted - everyone spoke softly like they were at a funeral for months after the attacks.
We all remember "we were one" after the towers went down. We were one nation, one people, reviling the terrorism that had snuck into our country like a black cloud.
How far we are from that day; and oh, how much hatred has taken the place of the quiet whispers of support.
I still believe in love. And loving my neighbor is harder every day when everyone sounds like Archie Bunker or Lewis Black (depending on your particular political leaning). It's the anger I can't tolerate.
I realized tonight - since I can't even escape a modicum of disgusting divisive modern media- that this isn't the country I want to give to my kids. My children deserve better.
I believe there's something wrong with the world and people aren't treated equally. Not at all. I will not argue with anyone on that. But we have militants on both sides. A militant and angry society cannot heal itself.
I beseech you all to move forward with love. Love thy neighbor. Love each other as if they were no different than you (regardless of religion, sex, race, sexual orientation, ability, class, political affiliation, or national origin).
A lot has changed in 15 years. I've changed in 15 years - and I cannot tolerate THIS world any longer.
For those that were lost 15 years ago, I pray for your families that have been left behind, hurting for your loss. I pray for the men and women of service who survived with lingering negative health effects and illness. I pray for everyone who had to rebuild. I pray for this world in hopes that we can become one people and recognize our humanity again.
